Justin Medina writes to us with $230,000 in student loans so far and says,

“I earned a bachelors degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach campus in 2005. Aeronautical Science is pretty much a fancy name for a “Pilot”. To my surprise I racked up $180,000 in student loans from the classes I took plus the flight training courses to become a pilot. It is a common belief that all pilots make a lot of money. This couldn’t be anymore far from the truth it makes me sick just thinking about it. My first year as an airline pilot, I made a whopping $24,000. No that is not a typo, I said my first year I made $24,000. After all the hard work, time, effort, sweat, and money, I could be making more money working at the local McDonald’s flipping burgers. Whenever I tell anyone what my salary was my first year and how much student loans I have, they often ask how I am surviving. The answer is simple, I don’t make enough money to pay my student loans off so I just don’t pay them. After a few years of not paying my student loans back, the interest and unpaid payments started racking up. Today I have over $230,000 in student loan debt. If I were to start paying the full payment on my loans plus my car payment, I would be left with no money for food, rent, or utilities. Yes maybe 15 years down the road (depending on the economy) I will start to make decent money, but by then I will have close to $1 million dollars in debt (ok so maybe not that much, but you get the point). I just don’t know what to do. Ill continue being a pilot being responsible for thousands of passengers per year. It was and will always be my dream job. Just remember how little your pilots are making the next time you fly. Tips are always accepted ;o)”

Ryan writes to us with $30,000 in student loans so far and says,

“Well, Im still working on my degress, Im double majoring in psych and nursing, so theres gonna be steady work for me, but by the time i graduate i will still owe a ton of money! My plan is to work 2 nursing jobs at 3 days a week 12 hours a day each…so thats 6 days a week at 12 hours a day! Yeah i will be out of debt in a year or two, but i will have NO life in the meantime just to pay what i need like bills and food expenses and then the second paycheck goes straight to student loans! Im basically screwed! I even started taking over 12 hours of credits per semster, because anything after 12 hours at my school is basically a free class…but still…Im frigging killing myself!!! So Im definitely on board with this idea…SCREW COLLEGE LOANS!”

Featured Student #1: Gel Medina

Gel Medina owes $100,000 in students loans, and writes to us saying,

“I am entering graduate school now in June of 2009 to become a Physician Assistant. The hardest thing about this is the graduate loan I must take out in order to achieve my dream. Even though being a PA is the #1 highest demanding job to have right now in the country, it still costs a fortune to get the education necessary to become one. It would make sense that if the country is in such dire need of PA’s, that they would make it a little easier on those wishing to study the career…maybe lower education costs or maybe offer more scholarships for it. Unfortunately, this is far from happening in our country. The saddest part is that there is honestly about…4 scholarships out there for PA students currently enrolled in a graduate school. How on earth do they expect to fill the positions all over the country if the tuition is sky-high and they won’t help us at all? Something must be done about this…it is unfair! Hopefully with the help of this website, colleges and loan companies will realize how difficult they are making it for students to succeed and achieve their goals. With their help, we will be able to reach our dreams and will be able to fill all those jobs out there that need to be filled. If they help us, many will benefit from it. This website stands for hope….hope that college students will overcome loan obstacles, and will no longer be drowning in loan debt…Screw college loans!!”

Gel Medina is our first student that will receive a portion of our donations.  We need to help Gel, and all the other students willing to share their story and claim a percentage of the donation money we collect!

Please spread the word – the more students we can help, and the more donations we receive to help them the faster we can help fix this mess that has become our financial system for american education.
